Many members of Felix Mendelssohn's immediate family had remarkable intellectual achievements in such fields as philosophy, the arts, and the sciences. His grandfather, Moses Mendelssohn, was a famous Enlightenment philosopher and powerful reforming influence on Judaism in Germany. Moses's philosophical and critical writings generated interest among Enlightenment thinkers and showed that Jews could be intellectually at par with the most distinguished minds of the day. His publications include Philosophische Gespräche (Philosophical conversations), Phädon, and Morgenstunden (Morning hours). In 1762 Moses married Fromet Gugenheim and bore him eight children, including Abraham, Felix's father.
