This chapter discusses general issues on mental disorders and the treatments for different mental disorders. It may be noted that self-determination principles in mental health treatments that are scientifically supported are sparse; hence the discussion takes information from the present knowledge base. Part of the chapter looks at a number of ways that self determination principles and clinical and technical skill, coupled with science-based treatment, can improve and inform each other.
