The Large Ambonese Orchis

The Large Ambonese Orchis

(p.75) Chapter Fourteen The Large Ambonese Orchis
Rumphius' Orchids

Georgius Everhardus Rumphius

Yale University Press

This chapter discusses the various aspects of the large Ambonese Orchis. Orchis Amboinica major, radice digitata has only one or two leaves, which look a great deal like those of the foregoing Daun corra corra but are much narrower, two and a half or three feet long, two inches wide, pointed on top and bottom, standing there like little swords, also ridged lengthwise with five sinews and folds. It has the most leaves in January, thereafter a single bare stem that is also two and a half feet tall, bearing few flowers on top, like normal Angreks, fashioned of five leaflets with a short little bag, whitish, with purple stripes, but the little helmet has purple drops.
