This chapter discusses the birth of William the Conqueror, his childhood, as well as his family and the larger historical context in which he would grow up in. The son of Robert, duke of Normandy, and Herleva, his concubine, the chapter reveals the careful arrangements surrounding the child William, who was brought up to expect an aristocratic lifestyle which likewise heralded an era of political uncertainty. The chapter first delves into the matter of William's parentage before turning to the rule of Duke Robert and his influences in his son's life. It also looks into the court intrigues which served to highlight William's political importance growing up.
