This chapter describes the preparations in England and France for Henry VIII's meeting with Francis I. Given the kind of status brinkmanship in which both sides were engaged, the atmosphere during the weeks prior to the meeting was fraught with tension and mutual suspicion. This was heightened further as both sides began to expend huge sums of money on preparations while uncertain as to whether or not the other side was also preparing or instead leading them into a diplomatic—or even a military—trap.
