Cossacks and Conquest

Cossacks and Conquest

(p.1) Chapter One Cossacks and Conquest

Janet M. Hartley

Yale University Press

This chapter describes the Russian penetration of Siberia at the end of the sixteenth century. It considers the reasons behind this invasion and who the main protagonists were. While nothing is certain about who initiated the campaign or its purpose, what is known with a reasonable degree of certainty is that Ermak—the leader of a band of Cossacks—in the service of the Stroganovs, led the Russian penetration of Siberia.
