The Power of Knowledge

Jeremy Black

Yale University Press

This chapter focuses on the importance of trans-oceanic exploration and the acquisition of new information. It provides a background on medieval exploratory voyages in the fifteenth century, focusing on the importance of maps, globes, charts, and other navigational tools such as compasses and astrolabes. The chapter also explains how exploration and travel provided and confirmed new geographical information. The vast information acquired from trans-oceanic voyages and the need to order and use it encouraged a rethinking of the world by Westerners.

Keywords:   exploration, information, maps, globes, charts, compass, astrolabes, travel, voyages
