(p.170) Chapter Five The Great Purges 1935–1939
Stalin and the Lubianka

David R. Shearer

Vladimir Khaustov

This chapter describes the role of the security police during the period 1935–1939. It also discusses a transformation of the fundamental direction of police activities following the assassination of Sergei Kirov. Nikolai Yezhov replaced Genrikh Yagoda in late 1936 when Iosif Stalin became dissatisfied with Yagoda. Yagoda had failed to reveal the full degree of anti-Soviet conspiracies inside the Ukrainian security service. With Yezhov in position, the speed of political repression became quicker. The so-called Trotskyist Anti-Soviet Military Organization is also explored in this chapter.
