Abstract
This book focuses on the spread of the Black Death in Cambridge when the Black Horse of the Apocalypse with its pale rider picked off its victims one by one in the long hot summers of 1665 to 1666. The Black Death first appeared in Cambridge in 1349 and ceased by 1350. Before 1665, the worst outbreak of plague Cambridge had experienced occurred in 1630 and 1631. The town survived further outbreaks in 1642 and 1646 during the Civil War. By the 1660s, people believed that the plague visited every 20 years. In 1665, the disease, without any known cure, spread like wildfire throughout the town. Soon, several people remained in their houses with red crosses painted on their doors and the words “Lord Mercy on Us” written below.
