Abstract
Opera became an obligatory daily routine in Machado’s day, and writers were deeply involved in operatic life. Machado wrote as if he were the artistic director of a social and allegorical theater of Rio de Janeiro, drawn from the comic operas and French comédieslyriques for which he had written libretti. Both Machado’s literary education and his apprenticeship as an author were very closely tied to the theatrical and operatic world in Rio de Janeiro, an experience whose lasting impressions carried over into his fictional writings. Plasticity becomes a prime communicator of character, intent, and unspoken meaning in Machado. Theatrical comparisons animate the major novels. BrásCubas declares that his brain is a stage on which all kinds of plays are performed. The strong, dramatic feminine characters in Machado’s five major novels must certainly have been drawn from his descriptions of the international actresses he admired and reviewed.
