This chapter describes the British public school system from 1768 to 1827. Topics covered include the student rebellions at public schools, which reflected the permanent atmosphere of violence in these institutions; harsh student initiation rites; the reasons why boys found the time to engage in a wide range of highly inventive and imaginative cruelty; Samuel Butler, headmaster of Shrewsbury, and his enforcement of discipline; the failure of public schools to provide high quality education to students; how Britain managed to serve as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution given that the old public and grammar schools were so bad at academic education; and how public schools provided good vocational training for ruling Britain.
