Peace and the Imposition of Fascism on Venice, 1919–1930

Peace and the Imposition of Fascism on Venice, 1919–1930

(p.105) Chapter Five Peace and the Imposition of Fascism on Venice, 1919–1930
Italian Venice

R.J.B. Bosworth

Yale University Press

This chapter examines the imposition of Fascism in Venice during the period 1919–1930 and the Fascist regime's determination to translate World War I's practical and spiritual history into peace for all Italians. It first considers some of the sites of Fascist memory that can be found in Venice, particularly the “Colonna Rostrata”, a celebratory column that stands in the Giardini and is a symbol for Italy's victory in World War I. The Colonna Rostrata and its environs also reflect the expansionist ambitions of Benito Mussolini's dictatorship and its unrepentant violence. The chapter also looks at the Nicelli airport, another edifice that preserves echoes from Mussolini's regime and examines the harsh and violent features of Fascism, together with the socialists' defeat in Venice and the paradoxical suppression of the radical aspects of local Fascism.
