This chapter reproduces the 1743 libretto of Handel's Messiah and identifies for the first time all of Jennens's historical sources for the libretto's textual alterations to its exclusively biblical passages. It also offers brief commentaries on each of the movements, including indications of the precise relationships of their biblical typology. There is also a section comparing expectations about God's messiah in traditional Christianity and Judaism.
