This chapter assesses composer Aleksandr Scriabin’s philosophical worldview (his self-proclaimed status as a new Messiah destined to reunify all humanity and usher in the end of the world through the composition of his Mystery) and its interaction with contemporary social expectations regarding the appearance of a Russian Orpheus who would overcome the divisions of modernity. The chapter demonstrates how Scriabin’s self-aggrandizing image interacted productively with musical metaphysics, creating a circle of followers who reinterpreted the composer’s significance to mirror their own hopes for cultural transcendence. This included the rise of a Pan-Slavic reinterpretation of the composer and an embrace of linear historical progress that it was believed would lead to Russian cultural dominance.
