This chapter focuses on the final part of Persons and Places entitled My Host the World. It was originally published as a separate volume and, in accordance with Santayana's wishes, appeared posthumously. Completed ten years before his death, it actually antedates The Idea of Christ in the Gospels and Dominations and Powers. Santayana's last decade was not an eventful one, however, and could well be omitted from the history of his experiences with persons as well as places. Santayana spent his last years in greater seclusion than before, allowing himself even fewer contacts with persons and even fewer opportunities for direct observation of where and how they lived. Santayana, as shown in his autobiography, never sought a wide range of involvement with either human beings or their habitations.

Keywords:   separate volume, Persons and Places, seclusion, direct observation, involvement, human beings, habitations
