This chapter aims to outline the stress-process framework and discuss how it may be used to examine the use of corporal punishment by parents. From the perspective of the parent, the chapter outlines how the use of corporal punishment represents a potential outcome of stressful experience. From the perspective of the child, the chapter discusses how corporal punishment itself can represent a stressor with the potential for creating a variety of negative outcomes. Research that has been conducted on outcomes of corporal punishment has focused almost entirely on aggression. Moreover, there has been little research on the antecedents of corporal punishment, and few studies have specifically examined corporal punishment within a stress-process framework.
