This book describes responses to light in a diversity of organisms and their evolutionary relationships. Describing the importance of the sun, the significance and harmful effects of sunlight on animal and plant life on earth, the Introduction provides an overview of the contents of this book. The book examines the specific responses of organisms to light, in terms of vision, photosynthesis, phototaxis, phototropism, and photosensitization, and looks at the measurement of levels of light using photon flux and spherical photon flux. The range of wavelength of light, its biological responses, the chemical structure of photoreceptive molecules and color vision by the eyes of humans and other organisms according to wavelength combinations are also discussed. The book also describes photosensory and the energy-transducing systems of many organisms.
