In this chapter, Maya Plisetskaya reflects on her experience as a dancer for Swan Lake, a ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. This ballet played a major role in her life. She danced it more than 800 times from 1947 to 1977—a span of three decades—in cities from Moscow and New York to Paris, Buenos Aires, Helsinki, Kiev, London, Milan, Tokyo, Vancouver, Munich, Budapest, Cairo, Mexico City, and Beijing. Maya danced three productions of Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theater. Her partners included Vladimir Preobrazhensky, Slava Golubin, Alexander Godunov, and Leonid Zhdanov.
