In this chapter, Maya Plisetskaya reflects on her first concert experience abroad as a participant in festivals such as the 1947 Summer Festival of Democratic Youth in Prague. She was left behind in Moscow by the group bound for Prague, but flew the next morning after she was summoned to a talk at the Central Committee of the Komsomol. A ballet competition was held in Prague featuring dancers from Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev, Tbilisi, and Tashkent. The Prague festival was followed two years later by the Budapest Festival, then the Berlin one where Maya danced the Dying Swan.
