In this chapter, Maya Plisetskaya recounts her experience dancing in front of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin on the occasion of his seventieth birthday on December 21, 1949. The Bolshoi Theater invited Vakhtang Chabukiani, a dancer from Tbilisi, to dance Don Quixote. The entire first cast was selected, but there was no one to dance Mercedes, so Maya was asked to play the role. Maya then received an invitation to take part in the Kremlin concert on December 22, which was considered the highest honor. She danced the jumping variation from Don Quixote in the presence of Stalin and Chinese leader Mao Zedong.
