Yale University Press

In this chapter, Maya Plisetskaya recalls her meeting with the Russian-born French artist Marc Chagall in 1965. It was Nadia Léger, formerly Nadezhda Khodasevich, who took Maya to the Chagall place, located in St.-Paul-de-Vence in the south of France. Maya even tried to teach him the first position in ballet. Chagall also sketched her with charcoal on drawing paper. Ten months later, they met again in New York as Sol Hurok's guests in a restaurant. Mark Zakharovich was finishing his mural for the new the new Metropolitan Opera House. The following day, the last performance on the stage of the old Met, Maya appeared twice in the gala concert, dancing the Swan Lake and the first act of Don Quixote.
