This chapter attempts to find an answer to the question of whether the pursuit of wealth is a legitimate goal. It discusses that the argument that wealth is a component of social value must rely on the value of wealth itself. This class of argument is different from instrumental arguments—it does not claim that wealth will lead to other things; rather, it argues only that a society which has more wealth is better than a society that has less wealth simply by virtue of the fact that it has more wealth. The chapter also discusses another argument, which states that social wealth is only one component of social value. It claims that this argument requires a look at all of the components of social value and asks whether it makes sense to think of trading off certain components of greater value for more wealth.
