Putting Cairo to Work

Putting Cairo to Work

(p.52) 3 Putting Cairo to Work
The Crowded Greenhouse

John Firor

Yale University Press

This chapter details the Cairo action agenda by telling the story of programs in Nigeria funded by an international non-governmental organization, the Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA). CEDPA-Nigeria's programs mobilize grassroots organizations of women who work in their neighborhoods and communities on family planning, other reproductive health, girls' education, income generation, and democratic participation of women in electoral politics. CEDPA's experience in Nigeria illustrates a range of projects, from community-based distribution of contraceptives to the development of grassroots programs for women's economic empowerment through projects focused specifically on increasing women's political participation. Along the way, CEDPA touches on girls' education, literacy training for adolescents, immunization, and several aspects of maternal and child health. The story of CEDPA-Nigeria is about enabling women and girls to increase mastery over their lives.
