This chapter explains further the goals and aims of the book, namely to make a contribution to the discourse about mathematics education. It examines the factors and reasons for the debate and argument regarding the opinions and ideas exchanged between progressives and traditionalists. The chapter also attempts to provide a more “balanced” perspective into the topic. Finally, the chapter makes its case for why and how to move towards a more constructive and civil discourse about mathematics education. It makes suggestions as to where to go, the problem parameters that might be encountered, and how to go about resolving them. In essence, the chapter provides a discourse on mathematics education, taking a more even tone and stand on the matter in order to foster better communication and discussion between the two opposing views and opinions about mathematics reform.
