This chapter is one of two that discuss motivating healthier patient behaviors, specifically tobacco dependence. It starts with a look at the commonalities of behavior change and the natural history of change, before shifting to a section that applies these concepts to the relationship between “Dr.P.” and “K.M.,” where K.M. tries to quit smoking. This chapter illustrates how self-determination theory can be applied in a clinical setting, and how “self denying” motivation is one way to meet the patient's intention to stop smoking.
