This chapter sketches the social, economic, and political environment of colonial Connecticut, out of which Yale College and eventually the Yale Law School emerged. It uses broad panoramic strokes to outline the school's history over the more than two hundred years from its establishment to the beginning of Gene Rostow's deanship in 1955.
