Kanzi was the first ape to manifest significant language skills he acquired in his day-to-day living experiences. He spontaneously learned the meanings of literally hundreds of lexigrams and spoken words. The chapter focuses on Kanzi's language skills and highlights the “naturalness” of his language learning skills.
