This chapter focuses on the processes basic to learning and reinforcement. It discusses how some stimuli are naturally salient and how the salience of stimuli can be altered by experience. It investigates the relationship between salience and novelty and how two stimuli can be presented as a pair, as in sensory preconditioning. Finally, the chapter offers a reinterpretation of reinforcement and selected conditioning.
