The San Diego Zoo features a group of orangutans, chimpanzees, and pygmy chimpanzees in its collection. In this chapter, primate research at the San Diego Zoo is discussed. The aim of primate research at the San Diego Zoo is to achieve a better understanding about what brain complexities contribute to animal behavior and to learning and problem-solving skills. The chapter also discusses and illustrates a variety of learning experiments or tests conducted at the zoo, such as simple discrimination learning, learning-set training, and discrimination reversal tests.
