This chapter evaluates the psychological and social factors that may influence the stress–hypertension relation. The psychological factors include negative affect, suppressed hostility, emotional defensiveness, information-processing deficits, external locus of control, and maladaptive cognitive coping strategies. Social factors include reduced social support, poor family environments, and low religious support.
