The collapse of the Soviet Union and Communist rule in Russia in 1991 has been explained by historians in many different ways. However, the real nature of the Soviet system that disintegrated has received little attention. The overall form of the Russian revolutionary experience was shaped by the dynamics of the stage-by-stage process, while its basic content was determined by the challenge of modernization. The global process of modernization raises questions about the Russian Revolution and its ultimate social dimension, while the verbal ideology of Stalinism creates pervasive and enduring misunderstanding about the nature of the Soviet system. The system that the Bolsheviks attempted to put in place in 1917 was radically different from the one that collapsed in 1991. Thus, there is not simple explanation for the failure of Communism or the Russian Revolution.
