Sound and Discourse: On Russian National Musical Style
This chapter examines the national musical style of Russia. It describes Russian chorale and identifies what distinguishes it from its Western counterparts. It also evaluates the contribution of Russian music to fundamental problems of national metaphysical, ethical, and aesthetic self-consciousness and explores the role of national musical style in the expression of the critique of nationalism, which became a trademark of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Russian philosophy.
