Serving Captain Cook with Honor
This chapter focuses on John Ledyard's first journey with Captain Cook on Resolution. Having already been around the world with Captain Cook, the Resolution had proven itself ideally suited for voyages of discovery. Its broad, shallow hull allowed it to carry sufficient provisions to sustain a crew for many months at sea, while its crew of 112 officers, sailors, and marines was modest in number. By the time Ledyard sailed with him, Cook had already charted the eastern coast of Australia and had established that the great southern continent was no continent at all. The chapter also reveals that on his first voyage aboard the Resolution, Cook had circumnavigated the globe in high southern latitudes, rising above even the Antarctic Circle, to prove that Australia was not the northern tip of some great southern land mass.
