Conclusion Could the Breakdown have been Avoided?
This chapter addresses the question of whether the Spanish Civil War could have been prevented, and argues that there has never been a revolutionary process that has not been met with counterrevolutionary resistance. In the case of Spain, while the left destroyed much of democracy before July 1936, the counterrevolution created an opposing radicalism that was violent in the extreme and which sustained authoritarian rule for nearly four decades.
