This chapter examines Estelle Oldham's experiences in Shanghai during the period from 1922 to 1924. It describes the collaborative moments between Estelle and William Faulkner from 1925 to 1929 and explains that her fiction during this period was the stuff of an intellectual and literary dialogue that began when both she and Faulkner were still adolescents. It also suggests that Estelle's fiction tells the most about the person she was and her understanding and criticism of the different cultures in which she lived during the years leading up to their marriage.
