This chapter examines William Faulkner's relationship with Caroline Barr. It explains that Barr began caring for Faulkner either at his birth or in 1898 and that she became part of the Faulkner household during one of the most difficult periods in Maud Faulkner's long and often rocky marriage. It discusses how Faulkner's work was influenced by Barr and by his father's heavy drinking habit, particularly Absalom, Absalom!. This chapter also considers the relationship between Barr and Maud Faulkner.
