Haunted by Parents

Leonard Shengold

This chapter discusses how patients, particularly those who were abused as children, possess the coexistence of contradictory intense perception (listening, seeing, smelling) and intense blocking of perception and a sense of knowing. It presents a clinical example that illustrates a step on the path to owning in a child, and another case where the patient develops intense and erotic transference feelings towards her analyst.

Keywords:   abused children, perception, knowing, owning
