This chapter describes the love between Dorinda Ramos and Eduardo. Dorinda's mother, María Ramos Rodicio, whose surname was well-known from Parada del Sil, had died giving birth to her in 1921. Her father, Camilo Ramos, later remarried, this time to Isabel Mera Lorenzo from Mondáriz, a spa near Vigo in Pontevedra. Eduardo suggested that he and Dorinda should become novios. She said that she could not contemplate anything so drastic since it would be against the rules of the Carmelites with whom she was still living most of the year. Eduardo was persistent. In the summer, he would see her almost every day, for she used to go for a walk along the road or sit under a tree with some friend from the village.
