This chapter discusses the problems faced by Eduardo's industries. A strong, cold wind began to blow in 1962 in Eduardo's direction for the first time since he had come to Madrid 10 years earlier. The obvious sign of this was that during the year, the turnover, although considerable, constituted no advance on that of 1961, just over 2,000 million pesetas. Yet sales had been excellent: 4,554 trucks, 2,006 tractors, and 2,538 motors, of which 86 trucks and 105 motors had been exported. The explanation for the decline in income was that Eduardo had recently sold most of his vehicles on installment, a plazos. Even in a mild economic recession, many of those who had committed themselves to buying trucks, tractors, or buses and had received these vehicles fell into arrears with their payments.
