This book recounts the odyssey of the Jewish refugees and immigrants from hostile Vichy France to the Alpine village of Saint-Martin-Vésubie and on to German-occupied Italy. The story is told primarily from the perspective of nine families of Jews, as narrated by survivors from each. Born in the second half of the 1920s, these survivors describe the events that affected them during their journeys through France and Italy. The book also focuses on the experiences of many other survivors of Saint-Martin-Vésubie and their flight over the Maritime Alps to Italy. These survivors include Alfred Feldman, Louis Goldman, Ludwig Greve, Werner Isaac, Leopold Neumann, Rgéine and Jacky Gerhard, and Bronka Halpern, all of whom have written memoirs of their wartime experiences.
