(p.183) Chapter Nineteen Auschwitz
Holocaust Odysseys

Susan Zuccotti

Yale University Press

This chapter describes the odyssey of Jewish immigrants and refugees when they were transported by the Germans from Italy to Auschwitz, focusing on the experiences of Sigi Hart and Boris Carmeli. Hart and Carmeli were among the Jews crammed into boxcars that carried them from Drancy to Auschwitz, arriving at the concentration camp on November 15 and December 7, 1943, respectively. At the end of March 1945, Hart, Carmeli, and many other prisoners were moved again, this time to Bergen-Belsen in northwestern Germany.
