In addition to the almost 13,000 foreign Jewish men, women, and children in Paris who were arrested on July 16, 1942, Vichy authorities agreed to deliver another 10,000 Jews from the unoccupied to the occupied zone. Their reason: to rid southern France of the economic, social, and political burden of recent Jewish immigrants and refugees. This chapter looks at the arrests made by the Germans in the unoccupied zone against the Jews and describes the experiences of William Blye, Charles Roman, and Menahem Marienberg.
