(p.84) Chapter 3 The Trans-Saharan Trade: Mediterranean Connections

Sarah Abrevaya Stein

Yale University Press

This chapter examines the involvement of Mediterranean Jews in the trans-Saharan ostrich feather trade. It explains that Mediterranean Jews operated across the geographic breadth of this commodity chain and occupied nearly all of its industrial tiers. The chapter suggests that the Mediterranean Jews in the feather trade were not so very different from their American Jewish peers in that they exhibited versatility and geographical flexibility in the face of a volatile global market.
