The Way They Talked Then: The Discourse of Politics in the Soviet Party Politburo in the Late 1920s
This chapter, which analyzes the transcript of the September 8, 1927 joint meeting of the Politburo and the Central Control Commission Presidium, explains that this meeting focused on the denouement of the political struggle between Joseph Stalin and Nikolai Bukharin on the one hand, and the “United Opposition” on the other. It highlights the self-destructive behavior of Leon Trotsky and the weakness of Bukharin during this meeting, and describes how Stalin and his clique emerged supreme in this confrontation.
