This chapter analyzes the relationship between the concepts of history and chronicle in the historical works of Niccolo Machiavelli. It examines several historical distances at work in Machiavelli's Florentine Histories. It suggests that unlike his humanist predecessors, Machiavelli reached back into antecedent traditions in order to arrive at a synthesis that combines history particularity derived from vernacular chronicles with an elevated rhetoricism.
