After summarizing the stories found in the “Childhood Deeds of Jesus,” chapter 1 focuses on two main themes: childhood and cultural memory. First, the chapter documents how scholars have begun to move beyond simplistic and dismissive assessments of the young Jesus portrayed in this work, engaging with new questions related to how the depiction of Jesus relates to the social life of children in the Graeco-Roman world. Second, the chapter introduces readers to sociologies of cultural memory, which provide methodological tools for reassessing the various ways that ancient and medieval readers had a hand in shaping early Christian infancy traditions.
