The economic and social upheaval that accompanied the industrial revolution had a profound impact on marriage customs in Britain. Industrialization made getting married easier than ever before. The autobiographies of ordinary working men and women reveal new patterns of sexual behavior, and suggest that sexual desire was integral to courtship and marriage during the period. Marriage was not the only way to have sexual intercourse; there were numerous cases of illegitimate births despite the fact that births outside marriage were frowned upon by society.
