This chapter describes the process of research and the life of the historian carrying out the research. There is something quaint, it states, in spending years in the process of research delving into the lives of people from centuries ago. The archives shine a light on the people of Paris and their many faces. The archive is born out of disorder and darkness. This chapter paints a picture of the people discovered during research. The city of Paris, its people, and then their faces leap out from the archival record.
