This chapter focuses on the Hilton family, one of the ancient baronial families of the Palatinate of Durham. Hilton Castle had been their seat since at least the twelfth century. The large three-story tower house that still remains on the site was the original, self-contained family residence. Archaeological investigations have shown that when John Davenport was there, a medieval hall to the east of the tower had been expanded into a large manor house overlooking a garden to the south.
