This chapter examines how London life would have seemed familiar to John Davenport, the city in many ways being a much larger version of Coventry, with a population of more than half a million. Based on a presentment to the London Consistory Court in 1622, he appears, prior to that date, to have also taught at a school in the parish of St. Martin in the Fields. Davenport's selection as vicar came about as a result of the parish's dissatisfaction with the previous incumbent, Samuel German, who had been accused by the parishioners of being unsound “both in life and doctrine,” of neglecting his ministerial duties, and of attacking members of the parish “with continual calumnies in pulpit and out.”
